Azeem is a veteran songwriter/musician from Montego Bay, Jamaica and is now based out of Fort Pierce, Florida. His music is firmly rooted in Reggae with a unique blend of contemporary R&B and rock. Azeem’s interest in music began at a very early age while living in Jamaica where he was inspired by the music of many national recording artists. Now with ten albums under his belt, Azeem’s music continues to evolve with his latest 2012 release “When Culture Present – Intelligence Has No Precedence”.
Writing and performing for over thirty years, Azeem’s music and inspirational lyrics come from within and from what he observes around him. His influences are wide spread and range from the Motown smooth soul singers of the sixties like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding to the contemporary sound of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and John Fogerty & Creedence Clearwater Revival.
With Azeem at the helm, the evolution of reggae continues into 2013 – where his latest album clearly exhibits the reggae genre as it has come around. He is writing the latest chapter by merging classic Jamaican reggae sounds with traditional American soul, backed by modern instrumentation. The contemporary sounds of this cross-bred New-Generation R&B Roots-Rock& Reggae style can be heard as far back as Azeem’s first solo album, “Let Them Talk”, and continues to be heard in his more recent works, however with quite a bit more sophistication and emphasis on reggae.
Azeem believes it is good that reggae continues to evolve. It started as ska which was born in Jamaica after the Second World War when Islanders listened to R&B radio broadcast from the United States’ and then mixed that music with the sounds from neighboring islands (calypso, rhumba and merengue) as well as African beats.
Distinguished by the melodic off-beat bass, cross-rhythmic drumming, scratching rhythm guitars and chanting vocals, the music evolved through the Sixties as dub and rock-steady before finally coalescing into the classic reggae style in the seventies, eighties, and nineties, and gaining an international audience. Now in 2014, Azeem’s music is clearly rooted in Reggae which he has come to the musical revelation, suits his styling the best.
Opening for great artists like Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, Azeem’s past bands, which include “Sessions”, “Rebel”, and “Soo?”, have toured extensively over the years. Azeem has also recorded and performed with “A-class” Jamaican Reggae drummer Sly Dunbar who performed on many of Azeem’s past albums. Now with his current project, “The Chosen Ones”, he is currently in the process of putting together a national tour to support his recent CD Release.
